Last year, Ryan Briscoe, who started on the pole, overcame a pit mishapto stage a late-race comeback and defeat Scott Dixon by less than a second.Briscoe battled Dixon side-by-side for the lead in the final 10 laps beforeBriscoe beat Dixon to the finish line by 0.0077 seconds -- the fourth closestfinish in series history. Three of the series' four closest finishes haveoccurred at Chicagoland. Briscoe was the fourth pole sitter to capture thisrace.With the win, Briscoe claimed his third victory of that season and the fifthof his IndyCar career at the same racetrack where he sustained multipleinjuries in a horrifying crash in 2005.
Currently fourth on the points list,Briscoe struggled in the second to last race in 2009 and despite finishingsecond in the final race, he placed third on the points list, 12 points behindDario Franchitti.The 2008 IndyCar Series season ended in dramatic fashion as Helio Castronevesnipped Dixon to the finish line by inches. Castroneves finished 0.0033 of asecond ahead of Dixon in the second-closest finish in series history, for his14th career title. Castroneves, despite starting 28th on the grid, dominatedthe race, leading 10 times for a race-high 80 laps. He led 21 of the final 22laps, as he overtook Dixon on the final lap.In 2007, Franchitti raced to victory, as he defeated Dixon by just under twoseconds. Franchitti, who started on the pole, reclaimed the lead on the finallap and held on for a 1.8439 seconds win. Sam Hornish Jr led three times for arace-high 90 laps, while Castroneves, who finished fourth, led twice for 56laps. With the win in 2007, Franchitti captured the IndyCar Championship by 13points over Dixon.Dan Wheldon raced to victory in 2006, as he closed that campaign by edgingDixon by less than a second for his 11th career IndyCar title. In the end,however, it was Hornish who finished third and clinched his third and RogerPenske's first IndyCar Series title.
