The 2010 Formula One Korean Grand Prix will take place in just more than two weeks, on Oct. 24. The new venue received the green light on Tuesday after the FIA approved the Korea International Circuit during a visit to the facility.

Fears had arisen in recent weeks that the new track would not be ready in time after video surfaced in early September that showed the facility was missing curbs and did not yet have its final layer of asphalt installed. However, that work has been completed and FIA F1 race director Charlie Whiting carried out a site inspection. “It is satisfactory, and I will issue the license through (ASN) KARA,” Whiting said.

The FIA approval was welcomed by the promoter, the Korea Auto Valley Operation (KAVO). “We are delighted that all works are now finished to the complete satisfaction of the FIA and we join the whole of Korea in welcoming the Formula One fraternity to the Korea International Circuit for the first time," said KAVO and Korea Automobile Racing Association (KARA) chairman, and FIA Formula One commission member, Yung Cho Chung. "The KIC has been constructed to the highest standards and will become the epicenter of motorsport in the country. We believe the 2010 Formula One Korean Grand Prix will be the catalyst to ignite enormous interest in the sport across the nation.”

Chung also thanked the FIA for its support and encouragement in the realization of both the country's first F1 race and international-standard race facility. “The FIA has played a crucial role from the very beginning and provided enormous support in terms of expertise, advice and knowledge," he said. "KAVO has benefitted greatly from the FIA's tremendous experience, and we are grateful for their guidance.”

While the circuit itself is complete, several F1 teams said they expect some of the venue's infrastructure to be lacking, but they also said that they were happy to race there and that they will cope with any off-track shortcomings in the event's first year.

The Korea International Circuit's F1 track covers 3.488 miles and was, as usual, designed by F1 architect Herman Tilke. It incorporates local elements--such as the roof of the main grandstand which resembles the eaves of traditional Korean hanok houses. The circuit can accommodate 130,000 spectators, with 16,000 seats in the main grandstand.
